A New Place for Wild Country, Sporting Traditions, and Stories from the Field
The launch of the Bald Porcupine Outfitters (BPO) website marks an important step in something that has been taking shape for many years.
BPO may be a relatively new name, but the experiences behind it are not. It grew from decades spent hunting wild birds, working with bird dogs, fishing remote waters, learning from experienced members of the sporting community, and returning season after season to the woods and waters.
I created BPO to share those experiences with others—and to preserve the knowledge, traditions, and relationships that make a day outdoors about much more than the number of birds harvested or fish brought to hand.
The Path to Becoming a Guide
My outdoor education was shaped by time in the field and by members of the sporting community who were willing to share what they knew. During college, I was fortunate to find mentors who helped deepen my understanding of upland hunting, bird dogs, firearms, fishing, and woodsmanship.
Over the years, I have followed bird dogs through the storied covers of New England and across the open bird country of the Midwest. Along the way, my appreciation for the sporting life has been shaped by writers such as George Bird Evans, Burton Spiller, William Harnden Foster, Nash Buckingham, and Gene Hill—writers who understood that the lasting meaning of a hunt is rarely measured by the game brought home.
Those experiences taught me that every region has its own character, but the fundamentals remain the same: understand the habitat, trust the dogs, respect the game, and pay attention to what the country is telling you.
Much of my time afield is now spent behind English Pointers, pursuing ruffed grouse and woodcock in western Maine. Watching a good pointing dog work wild birds remains one of the most compelling experiences in the sporting life. The dog’s intelligence, cooperation, instinct, and intensity bring an entirely different dimension to the hunt.
My interests extend beyond upland hunting. I have a deep appreciation for fine double guns, wingshooting, fly fishing, sporting history, conservation, and the traditions that connect generations of hunters and anglers.
Becoming a Registered Maine Guide was a natural extension of that path. It gave me an opportunity to share what I have learned while continuing to learn from the landscape, the dogs, other guides, and every guest who joins me in the field.
What Bald Porcupine Outfitters Is About
BPO offers guided upland hunting and fly-fishing experiences in western Maine. Big-game guiding may also be available by request, depending on the season, location, licensing requirements, and availability.
The Sporting School expands that mission beyond Maine. Its personalized programs can be offered in Pennsylvania or arranged in other locations, creating opportunities to teach practical outdoor skills wherever they are needed.
The goal is not to manufacture a predictable experience. Wild birds are wild. Fish do not always cooperate. Weather can turn quickly, and even carefully scouted country can surprise you.
That uncertainty is part of what makes time outdoors meaningful.
A successful day might include a beautifully handled point, a difficult cast finally placed in the right seam, a lesson learned from a missed opportunity, or a conversation that continues around the fire that evening. The best memories often come from moments that could never have been scheduled or guaranteed.
BPO welcomes experienced hunters and anglers as well as those picking up a shotgun or fly rod for the first time. Every experience is shaped around the individual—their abilities, interests, pace, and goals.
Sporting School programs can be tailored to individuals or small groups and may include wing shooting fundamentals, firearm safety, bird-dog handling and field etiquette, fly-fishing instruction, wild-game preparation, woodsmanship, and an appreciation for classic sporting arms and traditions.
The common thread is a desire to help people become more comfortable, knowledgeable, and capable outdoors.
Respect for the Wild
Everything BPO does begins with respect—for the land, wildlife, dogs, sporting traditions, and people involved.
Conservation is not separate from the sporting life. Responsible hunters and anglers have long played an essential role in protecting habitat, supporting wildlife management, and passing outdoor knowledge from one generation to the next.
Bald Porcupine Outfitters proudly supports organizations working to conserve wildlife, habitat, and the sporting traditions that help protect them. Stewardship also shapes the smaller decisions made every day: how we treat a cover, how we handle a fish, how we work our dogs, and what we teach the people who join us.
The wild places we value will remain wild only if we accept responsibility for their future.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name BPO is a nod to the resilience, wild beauty, and distinctive character of Maine. The porcupine is quiet, self-reliant, and often underestimated—qualities that seem at home in the country through which we guide.
The black star in the BPO identity references Maine and the state motto, Dirigo: “I lead.” Together, the name and symbol represent a guiding philosophy built around knowledge, readiness, natural instinct, and respect for the land.
The name also carries some of the independence and authenticity I want BPO to retain. This is not intended to become a high-volume outfitting operation. It is meant to remain personal, thoughtful, and grounded in genuine experience.
Looking Ahead
My vision for BPO extends beyond guided hunting and fishing trips.
I want BPO to become a trusted place for people who are drawn to wild country and want to engage with it more meaningfully. Maine will remain at the heart of the guided experiences, while the Sporting School creates opportunities to share practical skills, knowledge, and sporting traditions in Pennsylvania and other locations.
That vision also includes bringing together guides, instructors, dog trainers, conservationists, writers, and other members of the sporting community whose knowledge and experience deserve to be shared.
Wild Quill will help tell those stories. It will be a place for field notes, practical knowledge, sporting history, conservation, bird dogs, classic guns, fishing, and reflections on a life spent outdoors.
Bald Porcupine Outfitters is about good dogs, wild country, good company, and experiences worth remembering. This website is only the beginning, and I look forward to sharing what comes next—from first light to last cast.
