There are many capable birddogs, but I have always been drawn to the intelligence, athleticism, andintensity of the English Pointer.
A good pointer does more than cover ground. It learns to read the country, recognizes likely bird cover, and adjusts its search as conditions change. The best dogs are independent enough to make decisions while remaining cooperative and connected to the p behind them.
That balance matters to me.
My dogs come from Cumbrian Kennel, a breeding program with a long history of producing English Pointers that represent the breed both in appearance and in the field. That dual-purpose quality is important. A Pointer should possess correct structure, movement, and temperament, but it should also retain the natural ability and desire to hunt—the purpose for which the breed was developed.
The dogs I hunt are not simply bred to run as far as possible. They have the range and drive to search effectively, but they also hunt with purpose. In the grouse woods, where visibility can disappear within a few yards, cooperation and good judgment are every bit as important as speed.
Then there is the point itself.
A pointer can move through cover with tremendous athleticism and then become completely still when it locates scent. The intensity of that transformation never gets old. Before a bird flushes or a shot is fired, the dog has already created the moment that defines the hunt.
Wild grouse and woodcock make every outcome uncertain. Birds run, weather changes scenting conditions, and even experienced dogs are continually tested. That uncertainty is part of the appeal.
For me, hunting behind English Pointers is not simply a way to find birds. It is a partnership built on trust, observation, instinct, and countless hours spent together in the field. The dogs bring their own intelligence and character to every cover, ensuring that no two hunts are ever quite the same.
